Why walls fail

Most Retaining Walls Fail From What You Can't See

A retaining wall holding back tonnes of soil is a structural job — not a garden edge. When it's built without reading the site properly, it looks perfect on day one and starts moving a few years later.

The most common reasons walls fail early:

  • Posts not set deep enough for the soil load and slope
  • No proper drainage behind the wall — water pressure builds up
  • Wrong material or spec for the height and site conditions
  • Built without engineering or council sign-off where it was needed
The materials aren't the problem. It's whether the site was read and built to a proper standard.

The difference

We Build It Properly — and Make It Look the Part

Every block is different. Sloped, tight access, multiple levels, or a wall that's had its day — we assess the site first, tell you what's actually possible, then build it to last.

  • We read the site before we quote — slope, soil, access and drainage all factored in
  • Posts set to the right depth and proper drainage installed behind every wall
  • Engineering and council approvals arranged and managed for you
  • Concrete sleepers or treated pine — the right material for your load and your look
  • Finished to look right — not the awkward drop-off next door
Anyone can make a wall look finished. Not everyone builds one that holds.
Built properly

The Parts That Make It Last Are the Parts You Never See

A retaining wall is a serious investment. How long it actually lasts comes down to the work behind the face — the post depth, the drainage, and how the site was read before anything was built.

  • Posts installed to the correct depth for your soil and load
  • Proper drainage system behind the wall — not an afterthought
  • Built to engineering standards where the job calls for it
  • A wall that looks good and stays that way — backed for 20 years
Every job finished with a full clean-up and final inspection — nothing left half-done.

Common questions

Got Questions? We've Got Answers.

How tall can my wall be before it needs council approval?
In Victoria, walls under 1 metre generally don't need a building permit. Anything taller — or a wall supporting a driveway, fence or structure — usually needs engineering and council approval, and some councils set stricter limits around 600mm. We'll confirm exactly what applies to your property during the quote.
Do you handle council approvals and engineering?
Yes. Where a permit or engineering sign-off is required, we arrange and manage it for you and work with qualified engineers — so you're not left to navigate council on your own.
Can you build on a steep or difficult block?
Yes — sloped blocks, tight access and multi-level sites are what we specialise in. We design walls that are structurally sound and tailored to your site, so the finished result is both usable and looks right.
Who pays for a boundary retaining wall?
It depends who benefits. A wall built purely to support changes on your property is generally your responsibility; one that benefits both properties may be shared with your neighbour. The Fences Act (Vic) provides guidance, and we're happy to help you work through it during planning.
Concrete sleepers or treated pine — which is right for me?
Concrete sleepers are the most durable, low-maintenance option and suit structural walls. Treated pine brings a natural timber look at a lower cost and suits lighter-duty walls and garden work. We'll recommend the right material for your load and your look on the call.
What's the minimum project size you take on?
We specialise in retaining wall projects from $10,000 and above. Focusing on quality structural jobs is how we keep the standard high and give every client the attention they deserve.
